چکیده

This paper summarizes the scientific legacy of Peter C. Waterman (1928–2012) who introduced concepts and theoretical techniques that have had a major impact on the fields of scattering by particles and particle groups, optical particle characterization, radiative transfer, and remote sensing. A biographical sketch is also included. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Local Sequence Alignment Against a Database Problem

Local Sequence Algignment. The local sequence alignment problem is defined as follows: Given two strings S = s 1. .. s n and T = t 1. .. t m , a substitution matrix Score and an insertion/deletion penalty δ, find a pair of substrings s i. .. s i+k of S and t j. .. t j+l of T that have the best overall alignment score, and return the best alignment for them. Local Sequence Algignment against a d...

Comparison of methods for searching protein sequence databases.

We have compared commonly used sequence comparison algorithms, scoring matrices, and gap penalties using a method that identifies statistically significant differences in performance. Search sensitivity with either the Smith-Waterman algorithm or FASTA is significantly improved by using modern scoring matrices, such as BLOSUM45-55, and optimized gap penalties instead of the conventional PAM250 ...

Scattering of Acoustic and Elastic Waves Using a Hybrid Multiple Multipole Expansions-finite Element Technique

In this paper, two different methods to solve scattering problems in acoustic or elastic media are coupled to enhance their usefulness. The multiple multipole (MMP) expansions are used to solve for the scattered fields in homogeneous regions which are possibly unbounded. The finite element (FE) method is used to calculate the scattered fields in heterogeneous but bounded scatterers. As the MMP ...

A Comparative Analysis of Feature Selection Methods for Clustering DNA Sequences

Large-scale analysis of genome sequences is in progress around the world, the major application of which is to establish the evolutionary relationship among the species using phylogenetic trees. Hierarchical agglomerative algorithms can be used to generate such phylogenetic trees given the distance matrix representing the dissimilarity among the species. ClustalW and Muscle are two general purp...

A new numerically stable implementation of the T-matrix method for electromagnetic scattering by spheroidal particles

We propose, describe, and demonstrate a new numerically stable implementation of the extended boundary-condition method (EBCM) to compute the T-matrix for electromagnetic scattering by spheroidal particles. Our approach relies on the fact that for many of the EBCM integrals in the special case of spheroids, a leading part of the integrand integrates exactly to zero, which causes catastrophic lo...
